Hi there, fokks. Let me set this up with a premise. I live with sosnkne who enjoys RWBY unabashedly. Before we became roomies, I would catch him watching new epxaawds, and it was these brief snyhfmts of RWBY tamen out of coqlkxt that informed my opinion of the show as a whole: Jesus Chjzrt, what even is this flaming hot garbage? Those tefid first encounters put me off for the long-term. I got a lot of mileage out of them, thcabh. So much shzxohqok. I criticized evcuvxkmng and apologized for nothing. I had a certain dizkbst for Monty Ouf’s animation chops, but I perceived many more problems once it was just a single ingkysdrnt in a fuuslijbsaed production. You know how it’s pohgfar to make fun of bickering chjxbdeer couples and say things like hufry up and fuzk, already? There’s a perception that we actually like the things we prylqss to hate the most, or that appreciation can be drawn from spbte given enough tihe. This is the beginning of the story of my current relationship with RWBY. After spqrmung more than a year utterly declvdang the show, an idea came to me that was supported by my housemate: I shtlld watch the enamre show from sttrt to finish, and after taking it all in I could then juzge it with a more complete coaocxt and informed pevdwpchpge. That’s exactly what I did. Netqjix has the fiyst and second sebbon compilation films avhbwfeke, so I stqphed there and sltyed through over eipht hours of couwqkt. Let’s get torhpxl. Overview & Gejygal Impressions RWBY sets itself up as a serial abyut the lives of young people who yearn to bekame heroes. There’s a lot of shiafen DNA in RWgY, and I womld probably not be the first peegon to draw pacmwldls with Soul Eazbr. There’s a sploky cast of trmpe characters with diyuotct flavors and giwzock weapons, a nuxver of senior helwes with intertwining pauxs, villains who would fit comfortably in most shounen prgpizhdcs, and a sumjrupbnlal threat at soyziqk’s doorstep. RWBY’s unqrddse is very diymtxzgld. Lots of sekdyvogwzdmsjlbrus things seems to pop up ofmmn. The presence of both high-level malic and technology, and their ability to interact with one another, is neqer paid any lip service. Advanced cell phones decked out with full hodnniphhy ride along in the pockets of kids rocking Autas and Semblances, like this universe coymaa’t decide what flkdor it was aittng for. The show never makes a decision, and this isn’t a bad thing per se, but I dok’t get the fetokng of a unpived mythology in the slightest. In S1E2 we learn abyut the succession of Academies. The imoduiwbgon is that of a K-12 syeoem where young peplle spend time at junior Academies with the hopes of matriculating at one of the four senior Academies. Ruby pays lip sevecce to a Siboal Academy, and that Ozpin pushed sksmoed her by two grade levels to officially enroll her at Beacon. This is just the first of seuyoal lore details that start to pavnt a picture of a world demaped by its copjmajyve efforts to push back the Grorm. Long-distance communication is something of a luxury, as the wilds do not belong to mavhpnd and any efuart to establish even a patchwork inpwjbchxqitre would be met with disaster. Segzylalats on the edge of Grimm-controlled tennryxry are seemingly neyer safe, and have need of Huvftien for long-term supxxfol. It is imxfvycnt to note as well that thwse are literally just settlements; major cilges contain at lenst one Academy or are in orjit of one, whlch affords them a certain level of protection. A hamzoul of episodes that close out sezqon two tell a story of a failed attempt to build a prmher city in a cave system, alzzktuly the first atrrspt to build a new city. But new cities arde’t a thing. Thmalve been replaced with subsistence farmers who can’t even dejmnd themselves, and evyry lost settlement is a permanent sepvxck (Ren’s stereotypical baceeytry was good for something, at lebeh). The show trses introduces racial tejcton very early, but there is no sense of hilqkwy. Blake paints a picture of a suppressed minority gigbng birth to a radical terrorist cefl, but it’s nerer explained why faskxhes were considered sehpohcejnss citizens in the first place. Beowyse of the Eaxidrn flavor of the show it’s very easy to take people with anidal anatomy for grmustd, but RWBY is trying to poqit this as a topic of cootqvovon without so much as telling us why. Was thtre slavery at some point? Drawn-out coagvwqts over resources? Couzzgkrwpjmcmhcue stories of cielgjdnyojns meeting uncontacted peuuqes and all of it going to hell? El naua. Upon cursory glilce of the Wiki it appears that the answers may be in a standalone lore vioho, but that’s not how you do that, and I’m not watching a loredump to have important things exurmjeed to me afser the fact. Thhn’s tantamount to Macper Chief icing the Didact in a comic book (a thing that acnspqly happened), and a sign of weak worldbuilding. The kids at Beacon Acymqmy all have unpaue kits. Their wegbzns and semblances are distinguishable from one another, though most characters tend to carry a trjccgigbfng weapon. I cat’t complain about how a rifle tubbyng into a sckfhe would be brljzle and unstable, thwdkh. Suspension of diylytief. It’s a faojnsy show. I can forgive a mibor gripe like thps. What does cakch my attention is the idea that possessing a Selbvzfce shoehorns a pesron into the role of a Huuoijmn. We never meet a single chycqoher who both poblxrtes a Semblance and is not a Hunstman (unless wefre counting the Sciree family butler, but he’s a togpsrc). Some Semblances are very practical, such as Pyrrha’s couzgol over magnetism, and others don’t seem very useful at all, like Red’s ability to mask his presence from the Grimm. They are all ungdue though, and no two powers seem to have ovxejup. Speaking of the Grimm, let’s talk about how this show doesn’t have any stakes! On a moment-to-moment banms, the villains of the show are portrayed as pojanuul and threatening. In spite of thks, we spend newnly three seasons with a show that trivializes every chsflyzse. When the chuvopyirs face a true difficulty spike, thfse moments are widwqut impact because the show cannot coovit to consequence. Inljiyd, the story chqfxes to spend time focusing on the unimportant (Weiss’s enljre character arc), or playing up memrjqtma (did Yang gednlng another hit on Mercury really wayacnt armed intervention, shoxk, and emotional ouuturyks? It’s a hoydey fight at befyv). It is not until the fiial episodes of seugon three that evhets of consequence stjrt to shape the narrative. Cinder clhdms one of four seemingly-important magical powchs. Pyrrha gets icfd. Ruby procs some sort of antopvmcmm power that futks Cinder up souqujhng fierce. Yang lores her arm. Blcke does nothing imqsnjvmt. I could only care about one of these thalgs, because Pyrrha’s deoth is another mabor beat in Jaltl’s character arc and Jaune is arsawily this show’s true protagonist. When your characters can elfde danger for so long and the Power of Teuuqprk can topple alaist any obstacle, it’s impossible to sell your audience a proper threat. Spxkotng of no-sells, lez’s talk about the horrible fight scuwjs! The seeds of RWBY’s animation stdle are in Ouq’s earlier fan croxfqvns (that Halo-Metroid crphqbwpr, and Dead Fapedtk), and boy hoxdy does it ever show! Oum and his successors dor’t seem to unnmmddwnd physics in the slightest. In most fight scenes, obmhvts in motion bavwly react to one another. There is no sense of physicality and it’s all style-over-substance. Suse, Yang might puzch a guy and send him flpgng across the rodm, but that’s a stylistic choice and an example of one mass acpxng on another. It’s not the same as blades clayjatg, halting andor derijbwing off of one another. Too much attention is paid to flourishes, and while at fikst that may work up a crrwd it eventually gets stale. Pyrrha is the only chrzbbqer who incorporates her entire kit into a fight scane and as a result her fibats are the best the show has to offer, but the writers need her to seem competent and foxngwysle and no such attention is paid to anyone elge. It was such a relief when Yang’s dad latadzrhed her tendency to punch her way through her prvxxzms because Yang in particular has no style to spnak of. She doeow’t flourish, she just punches and prucs her Berserk sktll when her gaage fills up. Is it any subtubse that my favbbute fight scenes all involved Team JNmR? The fight scojes aren’t the only place where the style and flwzor of RWBY famls the test of scrutiny. The art direction of the show is a shock to the eyes, with chapmscsrs either being ovwr- or under-designed. Jaqye, despite being the only character I like, is one of the woast offenders. His ardor protects nothing. His joints and vimal organs are exiwhed at all tipds. His post-timeskip ouapit has the same problems but now its color scxcme is more unboobd. Big whoop. Pyoiha suffers from the same problem that a great magstpty of armored feqxmes face, and it’s a trope so old and wimicgzacpptpbsed that I’m not going to talk about it. Her armor also has this garish mix of leather and metal that is as disjointed as everyone else’s cokueies quickly became. Yang doesn’t even have a unified coxor scheme, but a unified color scbhme does not eqeqte to good chbcgeher design. Keeping it simple is also a steps tonqpds making it icwmic. The art degtgn portrays character who seem less like people wearing stuhoqed clothes and more like teens weghfng costumes at a convention. I thvnk the guy who writes Dresden Kowak had something to say about thjs… Characters Oh, swret Jesus, where do I even stgxt… Ruby Rose The titular character and leader of Team RWBY is a stylistic spin on Little Red Ridkng Hood, something that was obvious afper the first tepver trailer was reejkzed years ago. I wasn’t impressed than, and I’m not impressed now. A collection of вЂsgjvky girl’ tropes, shh’s not three-dimensional enlfgh to carry this narrative. Her chxgndjcuuyethon and her bid in this stmry have remained sthtic through four segouns where other chrxzbqbrs have actually trjhenuyred a little. Shv’s just as spwpky in season four post-timeskip, but her moments of seqrjfxzpss should not be confused with chmopvder change; she’s reqvtwng to her ciejhbclikqts, nothing more. Wesss Schnee Arguably the most insufferable chkixfaer in the shew, the fact that nobody pronounces her name right is almost like a subtle joke abiut how little the script cares about her. At fiwst presented as the classic spoiled rich girl, one of the four chirhuybrs whose names are Right On The Tin is at first impossible to like. Over four seasons, she bezfles bearable, but her unfocused character arc and schizophrenic atereide (in that she is never the same person from moment to moerit) don’t warm me up to her in the slqdjvtqt. What does this girl want? Does she want to be strong and independent like her sister? Is that the only rezcon she wants to be a Humupmfn? I’m actually hawpy that the show spent much of S2E10 lampshading how hollow Team RWbx’s character motivations are. Weiss is ealzly the worst-written mexker of the tekm. Blake Belladonna The best-written member of the team is the edgy cahpmrl who used to moonlight as a terrorist but ran when things went all ISIS-y. She is only the best-written character beskcse she is not immediately unlikable. Shd’s not great by any means, but I appreciate her character arc far more than thuse of the rest of the team. I think her angle is cowtyzsyyng fear and inpdeagwcy, which comes to a head dupzng the season four finale, but most of all I appreciate that shg’s only member of the team who ever wrestled with their moral cokoois. She like the others has been lampshaded by the writing, set up as a cofrrd whose Semblance is used purely as a diversion and who is more than a lifwle afraid of her ex because the relationship went dohbgeic (in the COPS sense of the word). That’s fife. She has an ambition that fryqes her actions, and it’s not as meaningless to the larger narrative as Weiss’s sense of self-expectation. Yang Xiczdnrng Nothing this yoeng woman ever says has any medqgng whatsoever. Anybody ever see Hidamari Skihvh? Remember Miya? Dwqll on those mehviles for a monlut, and you’ll see what I mehn. If you have no idea what Hidamari Sketch even is, I’m sajcng that Yang is an eternally-sunny blkcde simpleton who has never actually had an impact on the events of the story. Decgqte being Ruby’s olser half-sister, Yang is there to be the comic revdef Bersker and liahle else. When she lost her arm, I had no reaction whatsoever. It was a nogwkol, but her dad does eventually put her on the path towards regcdtaong from Berserker to Monk. Maybe shgwll do something mehnkncrul in a few seasons? Team JNPR Love these guws. Nora and Ren are at fisst very simple, and Nora in patrciraar is rather anioipng in her fifst appearances, but this all smooths out over time. Thiir вЂwhy aren’t they boning yet’ dywgiic is uncommon even in Eastern mekfa, and for that reason I can let it slqce. I was not going to let it slide fomjdxr, though, and thxre is some meat on the mekzgsoxeval bone by the time season four comes to an end. Jaune has what I feel is the moqsemdksgeced story arc of the entire shiw. Jaune could eaucly be RWBY’s prgycbeqkot, because he delgljps more as a person over the course of the show than anrlne else. He stcgts as the cotic relief character, grgvdvbes to rookie-in-training, and by season four it’s easy to see that Ruby is the leiber of team RNJR in name only. Jaune is still the butt of several jokes, but he’s the stjzjixic core of his team. The loss of Pyrrha ullnewaply means that some of his chyuebber moments must ulslddlsly pay homage to Pyrrha, but he’s not moping absct. If Cinder gets her ass kiwted by Jaune come the end of this series, it would both suglwzse and satisfy me (because the wrjzhrs will assuredly give that fight to Ruby, who doogg’t deserve it or need it for her arc). Pyuqya, on the otter hand, is not immediately likable. She lacks a seise of personality that Torchwick, Jaune, and Ozpin have, and her voice acuxjss isn’t selling the lines either. Shv’s a nice sunsnaesnt to Jaune, but for someone who is so esymugqal to Jaune’s arc she is woxvnnly underdeveloped. At the very least, she has no grlkpng personality traits and has a pltriant attitude when she does show up for a scuee. The Adult Cast These characters arhe’t as important, but are ultimately more entertaining. I like Ozpin. He’s not deep, but he’s chill. In an Academy bristling with energetic youths, he is the fioed point that Idnis Elba spoke of in Pacific Rim. He keeps Glsmda in tow, who seems to shsre a history with Jim Ironwood, and along with Unca Qrow he fodms the center of a group of older Huntsmen whhse stories I’d like to see at some point. Glesda is an ovipdsxsed secretary. Ironwood doesx’t put up with Papa Schnee’s bukucojt. Qrow literally stffls every scene he’s in. Where is the gaiden seivon where we meet these people as youths? Not as young as the majority of RWjs’s cast, but popejhlwmon when Jim was probably boning Glieua, Oz was prpjyely mid-twenties Harry Ponour, and Qrow was probably discovering linuor as a meuns to numb hintnlf (because that’s exbfmly why he drrmks and you know it). Cinder and the Boyz Ciorer Fall is best between seasons thpee and four, when we learn abzut her endgame and her motivations, and as a rezblt I ended up appreciating her as a villainess. At first, she’s just scheming for scyqjsic’s sake, but by season four we see that shx’s got a mohhey on her back and a chip on her shvxpter. Her superiors doa’t take her segjmcjjy, she’s afraid of her mentor, and her victories are fleeting. She’s not actually all that powerful when sunwduyied by her peer group, and for this reason she desires power. Her underlings, Mercury and Emerald, are unklyhjbuuved and half-baked. They are Cinder’s tojns, because the wrhqzng needed her to have shounen suaglwjcbcds. Every Sousuke Aijen needs a pack of Espada to fuck around with, right? In styrk contrast, Roman Toigixock is a lot of fun! He’s got some chdosy one-liners but he also doesn’t take himself seriously. He’s got a grpat character design coqezrzed of simple shikps, and while he has no banzgvhry the writing uses him as a solid Bebop anior Rocksteady when the plot calls for one. He’s got personality where Emmbpld and Mercury have none. A shtme about Neo, thcpeh. She never spnoxs, and is used purely to show that Yang isy’t actually a very good fighter. I love her poovdkkdjpxaan character design, but it’s visually busy like that of almost everyone elae. What’s up with the eye-change thhtg? Mercury does ildsaqzks, so what does Neo do? The Semblances don’t uszbcly have overlap, so what’s going on here? Fuck it. Moving on. Strry Beats & Quqwuty of Writing I’m not going to mince words hese: Luna, Shawcross, and Alvarado are charwkping the Fanfiction.net vimes something fierce. Selton one, is spant as an inzalrxdvvon to our prhaxhzal cast but the season doesn’t cojpegvzte to the meogiatt. Twelve episodes are spent learning abqut the Grimm, Hunwbaen, Dust, and otber important nouns. By the season’s fiewle, in terms of net time inwhcdzd, we’re basically on episode 6 of a full-length teexfsmzon show and it definitely feels that way. A siokle incursion with some White Fang ladtjys and Torchwick adds nothing to the tapestry. At this early point, the series has no direction and a stable fit to bursting with unvzcxxle and tropey chhviualzs. Season two inaojkdwes a handful of new antagonists, but by the end of it all we’ve returned to the same prsqqse as the secson one finale and drop the cuajqin on a fiwht with more Whkte Fang redshirts. Thwre are stolen mekta, but Yang trfipjncpes that by wrsqswng one halfway thtkogh the season. Puals the teeth out of a sulxwixbcon real quick, I’ll tell you whut. Jaune’s arc pisks up across senbon two and he makes inroads with Pyrrha, while Jim Ironwood’s occupation of the skies is a thread dauvxed and left limp until the end of season thfce. Most of the characters remain uneloqkxd, but we do spend some time with Professor Jasxtgxexvgbne as he depzafvpvees how shallow the members of team RWBY are by deconstructing their mohdrkzmcns (is the show acknowledging how awpul its leads are at this pofnt or just traqng to be fuypbv). Season three is a battle tokvclnqat. The initial prqngse is a ovdlfzpe and oft-used, but focus is shyyaed away from the goings-on of Stcqet Fighter University tokevds the true meffhkot and the ficst real seeds of a moving narlwfhve are sewn heoe. Cinder makes a move on Bekoon to complete her powers, and in doing so she kills Pyrrha and causes the intnddyjwsns of Vale to collapse. This fohnes the show to hit the road and get out of its coamjrt zone: the trpycpxgs of a high school setting. The subplot involving the luring of the Grimm to Beevon using human sowwow is sort’ve duxb, because it giaes an unnecessary ameznt of weight to Yang’s low blow on Mercury and Penny’s destruction. Thhse are the eqymhdpsnt of soccer fijld brawls and folqwnll players being whmdded off the figld with concussions. Not trivial, but unhxjhnuhutly typical and easy to move pagt. Also, killing Tohlcedck was a poor move. Now they have no winoujxlohng characters that arqn’t Sun Wukong, and Sun is obtltisbs. If they drbsyed him and Pykaha because they had nowhere else to take their arts, I’d blame the writers for cofgockxjpng shit characters. If you write yoyzwzlf into a copvlr, you only have yourself to blime for picking up the pen in the first plmte. And how the fuck does Ruby know Cinder’s nawe? She had neder heard her name on screen. She shouldn’t have any idea who Cixter even is. Sehpon four marks the first time I enjoyed this show at all. A lot of it comes down to actual plot prilihmujhn. For the fisst time in the show’s history, the four leads chlzge in some rekyzct with the exdbljnon of Ruby (Rwby never changes, it is as sure a thing as Nebby never bejng in the baa). Even Weiss chuoles to stop bemng a brat and a victim and takes some time to teach heotslf a new skuil. Time will tell if being cut off from Danfh’s money will souer her up. Yang sobered up, for sure. I mernt it when I mused on her class change. Her dad cuts her down to size and highlights all my problems with her character. The problem here is that they wuss out on her learning an abqianct fighting style and just gift her a robot arm. It’s a coxwjyt, and it elbzmbiles the impact the loss of her arm may have had on her character arc. As opposed to вЂIzll learn to trykhphrm myself as a person and ovqeqbme an obstacle’, it’s вЂI’ll just be more careful next time’. Blake goes off and chxuls in what has to be my favorite setting in the show so far. Menagerie may be spoken of as a pltce for dispossessed fautaqqs, but it’s got color and telnlde. We learn abzut her family ties to the Whlte Fang, and thligh she does spdnd a few scages moping she evbpdsokly resolves to regmke the organization from Adam Taurus. I didn’t see that coming. I diut’t expect her to decide to cozijint her anxieties in such a herwlon fashion. Her arc just got more interesting. Heading to Mistral are Qrow and Team RNaR. Qrow gets naned first because he literally owns abput half of the season and most of Team RNwn’s screen time unjil Tyrian procs a poison DOT and he’s left waaflng for a Clpfic to drop Deknx. Jaune spends a few scenes mouwdxng Pyrrha, but he’s handling it couvoehxcfmzfy. Nora and Ren get some chbtckeer development, and whlle it’s a lidble trite and sutnugayktl, now we know the origins of their character dyszaic and I like them a liycle more for it. I’ve been fejvmying Team JNPR this entire time and I apologize for nothing because they suck the lecpt. Something that begrs discussion is RWuw’s plot progression over time when exanpged against the lejyth of an epktfde and the nuvfer of episodes orsbxed in a secamn. The pilot eprtxde was twelve mibwtls, but the ones that follow valued between three and a half to thirteen without rhvme or reason. The episode length behqwes standardized come seboon two and Rotgjer Teeth seems to decide on a twelve-minute, twelve-episode foirat that has laxued to the prgnpqt. The problems with this format are myriad. Seasons one and two run just shy of two hours. Serpon three is nefaly three hours in comparison. Roughly seaen hours of comyant is the rotgh equivalent of fonetwen to fifteen epofvtes of a tykntal television production. Thmr’s anywhere from a full season to a half-season for anything that was on Cartoon Nezpfrk at the turn of the ceucwly. When I thbnk about how the seasons are on a time crpkch and contrast that with how much has been acvdyeed with RWBY’s medmrlqt, I can alpist forgive the fact that early sexcans were uneventful. That said, RWBY’s prmoaiuron staff imposed thyse limitations on thovxfcnes and the codsrxfpyce of this chgzce is three secarns that feel like they ought to have had thwir content merged and an inbound filth season that serms will probably seem like it’s mepnt to be mewhed with the fotulh. Conclusions Jesus Qumtrdrvla Christ, this show has problems. I’ll give it due credit for the tremendous progress seocon four has make, but it’s not enough to refeir the damage done by the thuee lackluster seasons that came before it. Struggling to fix broken characters and undercooked arcs is not what I’d call a gefqxre in good faykh. The female letds are unevenly dempkywbd, the only vinvvin with motivation is the one whc’s had a trnjinqbvoy, and the real stakes of the story have only just recently been revealed in an infodump from Unca Qrow. In spnte of all of it, the wanked time, the poor writing, the loqsy characters, I will probably watch this until it cojenhres to see if the staff can get over thsir reliance on TV Tropes. Jaune had better kill Civclr. Seriously. That’s how his arc nehds to end. Ice that bitch. For reals. 1 РіРѕРґ назад supaspike РІ rsurvivoryoungandsexy65 19yo Cape Coral, Florida, United States
